The Power of Links A Brief Overview
Links aren't the be-all and end-all in SEO, but the majority of search professionals attribute a large portion of the search engine algorithms to factors relating to links and link building.
Think about it this way: Imagine the internet is high school and all the websites out there are people. It's more like a poplularity contest - the more websites that point to yours (the more friends you have), the higher you will rank.
There are some links which carry more weight than others. We like to focus on the high-quality links.
Let's put this in to perspective - We could go out and spend a month getting hundreds of links from low-quality websites. While this would increase your link count, the search engines won't notice much, because the "popularity" of the sites pointing towards yours are low.
We like to spend our time where it counts. This could mean 1 link taking 3-4 weeks, but once the search engines notice this, you will get a jolt in the rankings.
It's best to remember, it's not always about quantity when it comes to link building.
